Melissani is a lake with no roof, and the photograph everyone wants is the one where the sun drops straight through the opening and the water lights up from below. That needs the sun high, which on this coast means roughly 11:00 to 14:00. Earlier and later the light comes in at an angle: the colour is still there on the far side of the chamber, softer, and the stalactite chamber beyond the rope passage looks the same at any hour because no daylight reaches it.
The queue keeps the same hours as the light. Reports from 2025 and 2026 put a typical wait at 30 minutes in May and July, up to two hours between 12:00 and 14:00 in July 2026, an hour and a half or more when a cruise ship is in, and longer still at the September peak. Without a queue the whole visit is 30 to 60 minutes; with one it is one to two hours. How long the visit takes.
So: arrive for opening at 09:00 and you are on the water before the first coach parks. Arrive after 15:30 and the coaches have gone back to Argostoli. Cruise days
Argostoli has one cruise berth and a season from March to November; September 2026 alone has 19 calls, and a ship is in port for eight to thirteen hours. The coaches and cruise groups arrive at the lake from about 10:00, which is the queue everyone writes about. In the shoulder months the municipality goes further and adjusts the cave hours to the ship arrivals, so a spring visit is easier on a day with no ship. If you are the cruise passenger, the two ways round the wave are a guide who stands in the line for the group, or a small van that leaves before the coaches. Reviewers of the semi-private tour say so in their own words: “Great day out, got us to the most popular spots early so we avoided the queues and we had more time then expected at the beach.” (Molly, July 2026); and Ian, in September 2026, calls getting to the lake early and beating the larger coaches the plus point of the day. Month by month
April is the shoulder: in 2025 the cave opened only on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, 10:00–12:00, with the days moved when a ship called. Phone before driving. May and June are the sweet spot: the 2026 early-season hours were 10:00–16:00 with last entry at 15:30 from 4 May, the reported wait is around 30 minutes, and reviewers of the lake-and-beach tour in June 2026 report no waiting at all twice and a long wait once. July and August are the light at its strongest and the queue at its longest: up to two hours at midday. One August 2026 reviewer of the four-hour tour: “Although there was a one-hour wait at the lake, the time passed quickly because Eva stood in line for the whole group.” (Juliane). Come for opening or after 15:30, or let a guide hold the place. September and October keep the summer heat out of the water and the cruise calendar at its fullest, so the ship schedule matters more than the month; the summer hours have no printed end date, so check the notice for October. November to March is a few mornings a week or closed, and the sun is too low for the beam in any case; go for the boat, not the colour.
If the beam is the point of the trip and you have a car, do Drogarati at opening and reach Melissani at 11:00 with the queue still short; if the boat is the point, do Melissani at 09:00 and Drogarati after. The two caves, and the order.
Which tour gets there first
Every tour from Argostoli arrives around late morning; that is the geometry of a 30 km drive after a 09:00 pickup. The difference is what happens on arrival. The semi-private van from the cruise terminal, rated 4.5 from 39 ratings, is the one whose reviewers say it beats the coaches to the lake, and it swims at Myrtos or Antisamos afterwards. The four-hour coach tour is the one with both cave tickets included and a guide who stands in the queue. Neither sells a way past the line, because none exists.
