What to wear to Melissani Cave

Feet first

The way in is a sloping tunnel with roughly a hundred stone steps and handrails, then a pier, then a wooden boat that twelve people climb into and out of with wet feet. Every listing says the same thing in its own words: comfortable shoes, uneven surfaces, some walking and steps. Trainers or sandals with a grip sole; not flip-flops. The queue is outdoors

In July and August the wait between noon and two has been reported at up to two hours, and it stands in the sun. A hat and a bottle of water are more use than anything you will wear inside. The café at the entrance sells drinks, and on the four-hour tour the guide stands in the line while the group finds shade. One August 2026 reviewer: “Melissani caves was busy being mid August but our guides saved our place in the line, whilst we could go and grab a coffee and some shade.” (Joanne). Beach stops, and photographs

Three tours swim: Makris Gialos on the lake-and-beach tour, Myrtos or Antisamos in the semi-private van, Myrtos in the private car. The van’s listing asks for swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and walking shoes, and that list covers all three. Photography on the boat is allowed; flash and tripods are discouraged, and the boatmen will take a photo with your phone if you ask. The light is best from the boat between 11:00 and 14:00.
